Great video about video from the guys at ReelSEO. They say that the new iPad is changing the way people consume video, especially now that the iPad supports 4G/LTE. Watch out, though, those big video files will eat up bandwidth quickly.

Cool gadget for iPhone videographers

All Things D reviewed it's first gadget, the Swivl, which is a remote controlled dock for your iPhone. You control the tilt, rotation, etc. with an included remote. Sounds like a good option for folks who have ever felt like they needed a third hand for reviews, chats and product shots.

The Byte, my new show

The jury is still out on whether it will be a success, but the idea behind The Byte that I produce for IDG is to bridge the gap between the lulls in the news cycle. Those gaps are typically wider in the video world because video content is harder to come by than text. Slow news day for a print reporter? Rewrite a press release and problem solved.
The Byte takes the news of the day and packages it into a quick one-minute report set to music and flashy graphics. The graphics were adapted from Digital Juice content and the audio came from the same company as well. It ended up being 64 layers of video in an Adobe After Effects project. At only a minute, the project took about 30 minutes to render. Usually a minute should only take about a minute.

I hope that this could be a daily show, but right now I'm in the process of streamlining my workflow so I may miss a day here and there. I also travel about once a month for work so there will be a hole when I physically can't produce the show. My goal is to produce The Byte in 100 minutes or less, start to finish.

Here's my planned breakdown:

10 minutes for story curation
10 minutes for voiceover
10 minutes for copy rewrite
25 minutes for editing
30 minutes for rendering
15 minutes to upload and publish metadata

WSJ.com had a great story Tuesday about the solar flare that's causing some of the best Northern Lights in nearly a decade and also causing some airlines to reroute flights. In this package there are multiple elements including an article, video featuring an interview, a slideshow, a second video from NASA and hyperlinks throughout the article. Each element tells a different part of the story and all three come together to explain a fascinating phenomenon. What's more is that the article is a great SEO tool to promote the videos and slideshow. Remember, Google can't yet see videos, it can only see and "spider" text. So by having a keyword rich article beside a video, it helps point users to content that may otherwise be difficult to find.

Whether or not you agree with the politics, the Obama administration certainly got its social media strategy right. Heck, President Obama is the first commander in chief of the US to be able to carry a cell phone! From Twitter, to behind the scenes YouTube videos it's no surprise that the White House is providing their own feed to watch the SOTU. It's also a great move by the PR team. They'll be able to provide the numbers to back up what the president is saying, but of course keep in mind the source.
